UNDERSTANDING ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES
AP courses are the ‘hard currency’ of college admissions. These courses are graded on a 5.0 scale, not a 4.0 scale, allowing elite students to have GPA’s above a 4.0.
AP Exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. Only 4% of Black Students score 3 or above on AP Exams.
Many Black Students attend schools that do not offer any or enough AP Courses. Black Students that are in AP Courses are often not taught to the College Board Standards for these courses. Low AP scores mean low selective college admission rates.
The National College Center provides the guidance and resources for your Black Student to excel in AP Classes and the AP Exams.
Black Parents must become experts on AP Courses.
